“I immediately went upon the highest hill where to my mortification I discovered a reef of rocks laying about 2 or 3 leagues without the island extending in a line NW and SE father than I could see…” ~ Capt. James Cook

“Essential. Must do it” said Brutus, the Lizard Island Resort watersports manager. An ex-tugboat man, Brutus is about the size his name implies. Not sure when he last climbed the Lizard Island peak, then, which is moderately challenging and truly unforgettable. How Cook kept his cool is beyond me. The reef reveals its full splendour as you near the peak.

Ross and Iain were up the mountain at daybreak after visiting the Research Centre the day before. Iain of course, seemed to know everything and everybody, and it was there we found a copy of Cook’s original journal. Fair winds called though, and by 10 am we headed north, bound for Cape Melville! On the road again…..
