10 July 2012, Mele Island
For the next month we are based in the harbour of Port Vila, in the not very glamorous marina of Yachting World. Nothing very worldly about it at all me thinks as it compares quite dismally against the slightly more modern Fijian marinas. So, to those who spent time with us at Savusavu, that was quite the Riviera  .. rustic as it was!

From here we’ll make day trips or short stays up the coast and leave the boat here for a week when we return to Sydney for our ‘holiday’ as Ken puts it.  Can’t wait to share the Vanuatuan highlights (so far) with the Kennys who arrive this weekend . Then when we whisk ourselves back to Resolute in August, post Sydney, with Prue and Animal, we depart Port Vila for good and head up to the more rural, the more beautiful and quite undeveloped northern islands of Vanuatu. I’m hoping it’s even half as beautiful as we’ve heard….

Had a gorgeous day yesterday with Naomi, Ted and Sophie on board, a day at Hideaway Bay on Mele Island.  The island is only a short sail from our harbour mooring in Port Vila and is one of several well known water front chill out spots for tourists. Usually we would try to avoid these, especially with a fee of $10 pp to even set foot on the island, but how could we resist with the sun shining and the deck chairs beckoning.  The island is a Marine Park and so an abundance of fish to snorkel with … love a lazy snorkel where you can find yourself at any time in the middle of a school. Shame I can’t add that the water was warm and bath like, as it was surprisingly brisk but hey …..

Today we wake, still anchored close to Mele island and the plan is to collect Hannah from the beach (her villa is closeby this neck of port Vila) and spend the day with all kids in tow. There’s a cascading fresh water waterfall to investigate this morning, sounds awesome from all accounts, and then all 4 girls are hoping the tiny weeny cheapo Thai massage place, back near our Port Vila mooring can squeeze us in this afternoon.  Jack has sensibly chartered a fishing boat for the day.
